A 26-year-old man has been arrested for selling fake car insurance policies in the name of Policybazzar Insurance in the Neb Sarai area of Delhi, police said on Wednesday.
Accused Rahul Kumar was arrested by the Cybercrime Police Station (East) team of Gurugram Police on Monday.
Rahul Kumar had been on the run since June 2021 when he and his accomplice tricked a Gurugram resident out of Rs 51,218 under the guise of renewing his car policy.
A case in this regard was registered at the Cybercrime Police Station (East) Gurugram.
Gurugram Police had arrested three of Rahul Kumar’s aides – Shashinath Pathak aka Abhishek Pal, Rajeshwari Singh and Nihal Singh in 2021.
“Rahul Kumar confessed to police that he also ran fake call centers from the year 2020 to 2021 at different places in Delhi to deceive several people and also hired people for Rs 8,000-10,000 per months for the crime. The accused gang, which split into the group of two people each, deceived about 448 people out of more than Rs 42.95,000 in two years,” said Preet Pal Sangwan, ACP (Crime) .
The police also seized a false insurance policy prepared by the accused.
“The defendant revealed to the police that he and his other accomplices previously worked for an insurance company. The culprits together hatched a plan to trick people into selling bogus car insurance policies for which they took data about people from various websites and organized fake bank accounts and fake cellphone numbers and started calling people from fake cellphone numbers for car insurance.We have confirmed this with the insurance company officials and then arrested the accused,” Sangwan said.
“They used to trick the policyholder in the name of giving a 25% discount on the policy premium by impersonating a ‘Policy Bazaar’ representative/agent and getting the money transferred to his bank account. The accused used to prepare the fake policies of the website named ‘ilovepdf’,” he added.
Rahul Kumar was remanded in custody for three days.
“While in custody, the defendant will be picked up after thorough questioning about other co-defendants,” Sangwan said. -IANS
