SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – It’s June 1, which means we’re now officially in the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season.
If you live along the coast, creating a hurricane plan and kit for you and your family is essential.
The damage to your home could be devastating. But what only makes it worse is when your home and what’s in it are damaged in a storm, it’s if you don’t have the coverage you need to help you get back on your feet.
“A constant reminder of living in Georgia, living on the coast, we need to focus on hurricane season,” said Georgia Bureau of Insurance and Safety Fire Marshal John King.
Commissioner King says part of that is a check on your insurance.
“Think of it like vehicle maintenance, personal maintenance, but this is an insurance maintenance review,” he said.
But King said sometimes the language used in different types of policies can be confusing, making it difficult to tell what is needed and what isn’t.
“Talk to your agent. Your agent is your ally. And they will help you review your risk tolerance,” King said.
King gave the example of a policy that covers the cash value of storm-damaged items against replacement costs.
“The cash value is the current value or second-hand value of the items for which you are filing a claim. So basically your depreciation and all those factors in your house. But replacement costs pay for new items,” he said.
King acknowledges that the cost from policy to policy will be different, but adds that it’s important you consider this now. It’s also important to consider what types of storms are covered by your policy.
“Home insurance covers damage caused by high winds and tornadoes, but it does not cover flooding, flood damage. A lot of people misunderstand that,” he said.
King says if you’re still not sure what you need and what you don’t, you can always call his office directly. For more information, please click here.
