Without health insurance, the cost of medical care can be truly astronomical – enough to potentially lead to bankruptcy. But unfortunately even with health insurance, you could still find yourself with a host of medical bills due to limited coverage or the need for services outside of your provider network.
But while many people with health insurance can still end up with expensive bills, some insurance plans offer a host of hidden benefits that can actually add up to big savings. Here are some benefits that may be hiding in your plan without you even realizing it.

1. Gym Membership Refund
You might like going to the gym and staying in shape, but you might not enjoy the $80 monthly charge from your credit card.
Some plans with this feature require you to submit records showing you actually went to the gym. You will need to review your plan details to determine how to qualify. There may also be a cap on the amount of reimbursement you are entitled to. For example, your plan can reimburse you up to $800 per year and if you spend more than that, the rest is up to you. But still, it’s better than paying the whole bill yourself.
2. Free drugs
Many people are used to going to the pharmacy and being charged a co-payment for medication. Yours can cost $5, $20, or $80, depending on the type of medication you need and whether it’s a brand-name versus generic version. But some health insurance plans offer free medication. If you need things like birth control or pills to control your cholesterol, you may find that you qualify for them without having to pay a copayment.
Additionally, you may be entitled to bulk supplies of medication at no cost – for example, a 90-day supply of the pills you take daily. In some cases this may require you to use a mail order service, but it’s worth getting the details so you can save money.
3. A wide range of mental health services
Some health insurance plans are quite generous when it comes to mental health services. You may be entitled to things like group counselling, individual therapy, free access to mental health apps, or other services that promote good mental health.
Know what benefits you are entitled to
Reading the rules of your health insurance plan might not seem like the most fun way to spend an afternoon. But it is important that you familiarize yourself with this information in order to not only avoid additional bills, but also to take advantage of the advantages offered to you. And if you have any questions about your benefits, don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and call the number on the back of your card. Sometimes talking to a real person is the best way to get the information you need.
