Why we chose it

Progressive only received 3.5 stars in our review. One of Progressive’s strengths is its highly readable website. This is essential if you’re trying to cut through insurance jargon and understand what a policy actually covers. However, a major weakness is Progressive’s car insurance rates, which are higher for most types of drivers.

Advantages and disadvantages

  • Relatively decent rates for drivers with a DUI.
  • Offers SR-22 insurance.
  • Provides rideshare insurance coverage for drivers for Uber, Lyft, and similar services.
  • Offers a usage-based insurance program called Snapshot. Drivers can sign up and try to save money by demonstrating good driving skills.
  • Offers gap insurance, which is useful for new car owners who may owe more on a car loan than their car is worth.
  • Complaints filed against Progressive for auto insurance are lower than the industry average.
  • Progressive’s average auto insurance rates tend to be in the middle of the pack for most types of drivers compared to other major auto insurance companies.
  • Car insurance rates for seniors, young drivers and teenagers are high.
  • Progressive’s collision repair processes have received a C rating from body shop professionals.
  • Does not offer new car replacement.

Geico vs Progressive: Which is Cheaper?

Geico’s national average rates are cheaper than Progressive’s for almost all types of drivers.

Geico offers cheaper auto insurance for good drivers as well as those who are speeding or in an accident. Geico is also the cheapest car insurance company for young drivers and senior drivers.

The good thing about Progressive is being cheaper for drivers with a DUI conviction on their driving records.

Geico vs. Progressive Car Insurance: Coverage Comparison

Geico and Progressive offer all the standard coverages drivers look for in an auto insurance policy, such as liability and collision damage waiver and comprehensive coverage. But there are additional features and add-on coverages that can set a company apart. Progressive offers more of these extras to drivers compared to Geico.

If you want certain benefits, such as savings on deductibles over time, replacing a new car with no depreciation if it’s full, or getting an SR-22, it’s essential to know what company offers what you need.

Geico vs Progressive Car Insurance: Which Has Fewer Complaints?

Both Geico and Progressive have complaint levels below the industry average, according to data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. Geico has a slightly lower level of complaint than Progressive.

Auto insurance complaints about Geico and Progressive primarily relate to claims handling, including delays and unsatisfactory settlement offers.

Geico vs. Progressive: Collision Repair

To assess how Geico and Progressive respond to complaints, we reviewed the CRASH Network ratings. The CRASH Network interviews collision repair professionals who deal with insurance companies, so they get insight into the companies’ service and claims processes. They can see which procedures are getting in the way of the repair process and if anyone is trying to cut corners.

In the 2022 survey, Progressive is slightly better than Geico, but both are average for collision repair.

Geico vs. Progressive: Car Insurance Discounts

Geico and Progressive both offer a variety of car insurance discounts to help reduce the cost you pay for insurance.

  • Geico offers more vehicle discounts, such as anti-theft and airbag, as well as discounts for being part of the military or a federal government employee. Additionally, Geico lists more than 500 groups, such as alumni associations and recreation associations, eligible for car insurance discounts.
  • Progressive offers an “online sign” discount that Geico does not. Progressive offers separate automatic payments and discounts on paperless billing. With Geico, they are connected under the title of an E-Banking discount, so you must register for both to get the discount.

Geico and Progressive both offer usage-based insurance programs that monitor your driving behavior for potential reduction. You must register for these programs and the discount is not guaranteed. Also, something to watch out for with Progressive’s Snapshot program is that your rates could go up if you don’t mark your driving well.

Summary: Geico vs. Progressive Auto Insurance

Both Geico and Progressive are national car insurance companies that can meet the needs of many drivers, but when comparing head to head, Geico comes out on top if price is what matters most to you.

Geico stands out for its lower average car insurance rates for a variety of driver types, while Progressive’s rates are less competitive, on average, for most drivers. If additional coverages and additional coverage features are important, Progressive has more to offer in this area.

Geico and Progressive have similar ratings for their complaints processes, and both have low levels of complaints. If you’re doing car insurance comparisons, both companies are worth a look, but if cost is king, Geico will likely be the one to wear the crown.

Average rates, unless otherwise noted, are based on a female driver insuring a Toyota RAV4 with $100,000 bodily injury liability per person, $300,000 per accident and $100,000 property damage liability, motorist coverage no insured and any other coverage required in the state.
